new green market in “Old South”

The small square on the crossing of Johannes Verhulststraat and Jacob Obrechtstraat houses a new green market: the zuiderMRKT. Every Saturday from 09:30 to 17:00 you will find stalls offering delicious organic food. The fun part is that the local community is the owner of the market: choosing nearby farmers themselves. The market is their initiative, which is great. It is not big (a mere 15 stalls), but it’s nice.

monday morning…

Nothing to do in Amsterdam on a Monday morning? Go to the Noordermarkt! Whereas the rest of the city seems deserted, the Noordermarkt is a lively place. It is the last real flee market in Amsterdam, where you can find bric-a-brac, antique and second hand (and much older) clothing, shoos and more.
It is not a big market, so you might want to go around the corner to the Lapjesmarkt (fabrics market) on the Westerstraat. At this market you will find lots of fabrics, but also new clothing, fruits and veggies, etc.

Behind the market stalls are some nice shops and some great café’s and coffee houses where you can have a good cup of coffee with the famous Dutch apple pie.

bargain shopping at Dappermarkt, a great daily market

cheese stall at Dappermarkt

Amsterdam South has its famous Albert Cuyp markt, West has its ten Kate markt, and East has its Dappermarkt. These markets are open 6 days per week (closed sunday) from 0900-1800. On Dappermarkt you will find over 200 stalls, but behind these stalls the small specialists shops are no less interesting. Diehards could also walk into the ethnic retail of van Swindensstraat and next into the Javastraat. The latter being a great street for small Arabic shops. You will like this.
